Project R.I.C.E 2014

On the 25th & 26th of January 2014, 400 volunteers distributed more than 8,000 bags of rice to beneficiaries.

An annual community initiative by the Red Cross Youth, Project R.I.C.E is aimed at touching the lives of underprivileged families with the gift of rice during the festive period. Themed ’Rice Up, Play Your Part!’, Project R.I.C.E 2014 raised over 97,000kg of rice (more than 19,000 bags), surpassing its target of 30,000kg. Due to the overwhelming response, the surplus rice will be distributed to beneficiaries on another date, targeted for completion by April 2014.

“Chinese New Year is a significant festival; and rice is needed for reunion dinners. Project R.I.C.E 2014 gives us an opportunity to reach out and help those in need. Donors have been very forthcoming – one generous donor bought 100 bags of rice!” shared Zhu Yue, member of Red Cross Youth – NTU Chapter and Chairperson of Publicity for Project R.I.C.E 2014.

From 11 to 19 January, the community bought rice at S$6.90 per 5kg bag for donation to Project R.I.C.E 2014 beneficiaries at all Sheng Siong Supermarket outlets island-wide. The response was overwhelmingly positive, as attested by youth volunteers manning outreach stations at the supermarkets.

Right through to the rice distribution, the project took four months of meticulous planning and execution by some 400 volunteers.

“Our volunteers literally forgot themselves as they sacrificed their time and effort for this worthy cause,” quipped Jaime Tan, Red Cross Youth – SMU Chapter and Head of Project R.I.C.E 2014 played a part in mobilising the power of humanity.
