Reflections of student volunteers from NUS who have made time for residents at Red Cross Home for the Disabled.
It was an insightful experience volunteering with the Red Cross Home for the Disabled (RCHD) this semester. In order to conclude this semester’s visits on a happy note, Project Smiles organized a Christmas celebration for the residents of RCHD on 8th December 2013. Through this event we were able to spread the Christmas joy and also show our appreciation to RCHD for the meaningful volunteering opportunities.
We were fortunate to have Mr Tee Tua Ba, Chairman of Singapore Red Cross, as our guest of honor to commence the event with his welcome address. The celebration encompassed story telling, origami session, dance, mass dance and caroling. We were pleased to have members from Cairnhill CC Youth Executive Committee to put up a dance performance and members from NUS Christian fellowship to lead us in caroling, during the event.
Project Smiles is thankful towards RCHD to have catered such scrumptious lunch for those who attended the event. The residents however, had their food cooked by the staff together with the bean curds ordered by Project smiles, for lunch. Moreover, volunteers of the event mentioned that the feeding session held at the end, helped to foster a bond between them and the residents, as they were able to interact and connect with residents of their choice while feeding them.
In a nutshell, it was a fulfilling event for all of us. We are excited to resume our subsequent visits to RCHD in the coming semester and meet the residents again!
